CONF: Southern Association for Ancient Philosophy

The 2008 annual meeting of the Southern Association for Ancient Philosophy
will be held in Cambridge on Thursday 18 to Saturday 20 September. We will
be celebrating the work of Michael Frede in various ways, with a number of
the speakers former pupils.

Papers will be given in the Faculty of Classics, Sidgwick Avenue.
Accommodation and meals (breakfast and dinner) will be in Newnham College.

Thursday 18 September
4.00 tea
4.30-6.30, Lesley Brown (Oxford) ‘Reflections on Frede’s Sophist’
8.30-10.30. A reading from one of Michael Frede’s unpublished Sather
Lectures; followed by Jonathan Barnes, ‘Remembering Michael Frede’

Friday 19 September
10.00-12.30, George Boys-Stones (Durham) ‘How does God think? Divine
epistemology in Origen’
4.00-4.30 tea
4.30-6.30, papers by two recent PhD students:
Eleni Kechegia (Oxford), ‘Plutarch’s discussion of ancient atomism
in the Adversus Colotem’
Paul Scade (Exeter), ”Leo Strauss and the study of ancient
philosophy: the problem of esotericism”
Evening, party

Saturday 20 September
9.30-11.30, James Allen (Pittsburgh), ‘Why there are ends of goods
and evils in ancient ethical theory’
11.30-12.00 business meeting
