A Priori Knowledge Workshop

2008年03月18日 22:51

Just a quick reminder about this event (particularly since UK academics might be off on their holidays soon, and it’d be a terrible shame if they were to miss out simply because they were too preoccupied with buckets&spades etc. to have remembered up until now):

Friday 11th and Saturday 12th April 2008
Department of Philosophy
The University of Aberdeen

The topic of a priori knowledge has a chequered history. It has been a central account of many theories of knowledge and meaning, and it has also been widely repudiated for offending against empiricist sensibilities. Perhaps without a priori knowledge there is no way to explain our knowledge of mathematics and logic, nor to defend any commitment to empiricism. Or perhaps a priori knowledge is no explanation at all, but just another thing which needs to be explained.

Recently there’s been renewed interest in the topic. Attempts have been made to defend something like an analytic account of a priority, and to explain how our possession of- and competence with various concepts can deliver something akin to a priori knowledge. In addition, as work in the epistemology of logic and mathematics has progressed, the explanatory burden for an account of a priori knowledge has become more clearly articulated. This workshop is to bring together key philosophers working on these issues.
